Our friends at and Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility recently announced a big win. DineEquity, the owner of IHOP and Applebee’s restaurant chains, announced they are removing soda as a default option on the kids’ menu at their restaurants! Thanks to the advocacy and urging of and their one million members, families will now be able to consider healthy options first . Here’s why this matters: when kids aren’t healthy, they can’t grow, they can’t learn, and they can’t thrive. As people of faith, an assault on our kids is an assault on our core values. Sugar-sweetened beverages, like soda, are the largest source of added sugar in children’s diets and if consumed regularly, they significantly increase the risk for nutrition-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This news puts IHOP and Applebee’s in company with other restaurants like Dairy Queen, Burger King, Wendy’s, Subway, Chipotle, and Panera…Continue Reading
Join me for a special live conference call with Oprah Winfrey, today at 7pm Eastern – space is limited, RSVP here. I wanted to give you an update about a special project. For the past number of months, I’ve been working with Oprah Winfrey and her team at the Oprah Winfrey Network on a groundbreaking new program. The project is called BELIEF – it is a 7-night documentary on faith and culture around the world, airing on OWN October 18th. And I have to tell you – BELIEF is really special. Religion on television is hard to do well. Period – it just is. Some attempts end up offending large groups of people because their beliefs are not represented. Others water down spirituality to the lowest common denominator. There are some exceptions to this — for example, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have done an excellent job with faith on TV. But overall,…Continue Reading
Last Saturday I spent time with the most important African American organization that you may have never heard of. I’d love for you to know more about them. One of my company’s clients is The HISTORY Channel. We’ve partnered with HISTORY for years, and are helping them re-make the iconic series, ROOTS. This project is a major undertaking. We’re working with LeVar Burton – the original Kunta Kinte, as well the trailblazer behind Reading Rainbow and Star Trek’s Geordi La Forge – Will Packer, and a stellar cast and crew including Forrest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose and Laurence Fishburne. HISTORY is pulling out all the stops to breathe life into ROOTS yet again, and make the series relevant for a new generation of viewers. The new ROOTS will be phenomenal. Here’s where the organization-you-may-have-never-heard-of comes in. For the last 100 years, the caretakers of Black history in this country have…Continue Reading
3 Things Believers Can Do After the Mass Shooting at Umpqua Community College Sensitize Pause. Stop what you are doing for 5 minutes. Just 5 minutes. Close your eyes, so you can find a place of deep empathy. Imagine an ordinary, mundane day. Going to school. Going to work. Dropping off kids. Managing schedules. Making sure you are on time. Seeing someone and setting up lunch plans. Then imagine the day being interrupted by the crack and heat of gunfire. Imagine receiving the garbled text, the frantic call, the inexplicable news that someone you love has been hurt, or killed. Imagine the overwhelming feeling of insanity – the horror and numbness – that these families must be enduring right now. Dip into empathy’s waters and sit there for a moment. Take a beat to sensitize. Pray We serve a God not just of the easy times, but also of the…Continue Reading
