Join me for a special live conference call with Oprah Winfrey, today at 7pm Eastern – space is limited, RSVP here.

I wanted to give you an update about a special project.

For the past number of months, I’ve been working with Oprah Winfrey and her team at the Oprah Winfrey Network on a groundbreaking new program. The project is called BELIEF – it is a 7-night documentary on faith and culture around the world, airing on OWN October 18th. And I have to tell you – BELIEF is really special.

Religion on television is hard to do well. Period – it just is. Some attempts end up offending large groups of people because their beliefs are not represented. Others water down spirituality to the lowest common denominator. There are some exceptions to this — for example, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have done an excellent job with faith on TV. But overall, projects like this are very difficult to pull off.

With BELIEF, however, I think Oprah has created something truly wonderful. As a Christian and follower of Jesus, I think it does my own faith justice. As a person who believes in cooperation and understanding across religions, I think it’s perhaps the most important series in this regard we’ve ever seen.

Each night from October 18-24th, Oprah and OWN will air 3-4 personal stories of believers, told through their own eyes and lives, not the words of academic experts. Viewers get to see what makes people of faith so strong; how belief systems are distinct; how faith can be a tool of healing and peacemaking; and the basic humanity that binds us together.

In BELIEF, you’ll encounter Ian and Larissa, two evangelical Christians who lean on their faith in Jesus Christ to endure unimaginable tragedy, and emerge stronger, more loving than before.

You’ll meet Mendel, a young Jewish boy in Hungary, grappling with how to bring his traditions into the modern age.

We meet a pastor and an imam in Nigeria, who come together to reconcile and to honor one of the most sacred teachings at the heart of both their faiths: love your enemies.

From a Catholic sojourn along the Way of St. James, to faith and forgiveness inside of a prison, to a trip into outer space that triggers life’s biggest questions – BELIEF really does depict the best of spirituality around the world. It shows how and why belief still matters for billions of people – especially in these times when folks need hope most.
